Bradley Cooper Dreaded NSFW Scene In 'Nightmare Alley'

Bradley Cooper is among the stars of Guillermo del Toro's latest film, 'Nightmare Alley'.

In the neo-noir psychological thriller set in the 1940s, Cooper plays protagonist Stanton "Stan" Carlisle, a man who gets a job as a carny and gets involved with a group of mysterious workers. The 'American Hustle' actor filmed his very first full-frontal nude scene for the movie, an experience he didn't exactly enjoyed.

Bradley Cooper Said Filming Full-Frontal Nude Scene Was 'Pretty Heavy'

Cooper opened up on going full nude for del Toro in an interview with KCRW radio show 'The Business'.

"I remember reading in the script and thinking, he’s a pickled punk in that bathtub and it’s to story," he explained on the moment he found out that the scene, filmed with co-star Toni Collette, was in the movie.

"You have to do it," he added.

Cooper also acknowledged that "there was nothing gratuitous about it" and that his issue with the scene was of a different nature.

“It demanded that we be naked — emotionally and soulfully and even physically for me, which actually was a big deal," he said,

"I can still remember that day just to be naked in front of the crew for six hours, and it was Toni Collette’s first day," he continued.

"It was just like, 'Whoa.' It was pretty heavy," he finally said.

Cooper Stars In 'Nightmare Alley' And 'Licorice Pizza'

In 'Nightmare Alley,' Cooper's Stan befriends a couple who run a mind-reading act. Zeena (Collette) and Peter "Pete" Krumbein (David Strathairn) teach Stan the tricks of their trade, and the protagonist soon realises he’s got a talent for conning people.

Alongside Cooper, Collette and Strathairn, 'Nightmare Alley' boasts an all-star cast: from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, reuniting after starring together on Todd Haynes' acclaimed queer drama 'Carol,' to Willem Defoe and Richard Jenkins, and more.

The film is an adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham's novel of the same name and received critical acclaim despite performing badly at the box office.

Cooper also revealed he took boxing lessons to prepare to play Stan. He added that he and Del Toro formed a deep bond during 'Nightmare Alley’s' production, which winded up to be a long and difficult shoot, partially because of the pandemic that halted production.

The American actor is currently in cinemas with another critically acclaimed film, 'Licorice Pizza' from director Paul Thomas Anderson. In the coming-of-age dramedy, Cooper plays Jon Peters, a real-life movie producer and former hairdresser.
